The Brain - a short history of evolution

Our brain has been formed over 500 million years of evolution. Its present state of development has taken place little by little over that period. Our brain today is composed of various parts, which undertake the most varying of tasks amongst themselves while remaining closely

Brief History of Evolution

In terms of evolution history the oldest part of our brain is the brain stem. He regulates bodily functions such as the heartbeat and respiration.  Alongside that it coordinates all the unconscious movement such as chewing, swallowing and digestion.

Behind the brain stem is the cerebellum. It is responsible for the coordination of movement and regulates body posture, the movement of the eyes and limbs and participates in the learning of motor abilities.

Around 300 million years ago the limbic system was developed. Alongside its tasks of controlling the heartbeat, blood pressure levels and blood sugar levels, above all, provides the instinctive reactions essential to our survival. To the limbic system belongs the hypothalamus which controls the pituitary glands. Here is the interface between the hormonal system and our body’s nervous system.

The largest part of the human brain is the cerebrum. It is composed of two halves and each of which controls the half of the body opposite it. Both halves, also known as hemispheres, are joined by the corpus callosum which is like a girding beam containing nerve tracts. Through it the two halves exchange information and are thus able to work with one another.
Certain differing skills are strongly developed in the two hemispheres. Thus the left brain is responsible for language and logical tasks. The right side is responsible for non-linguistic skills such as the recognition of faces and spatial sense.

The surface of the brain is covered by a thin layer, the cerebral cortex. This is the “youngest” component of our brain at around two hundred million years old. It is here our actual thinking takes place. It organises perception and memory and develops actions. This is the location of our consciousness.
