Germany has 32 world cultural heritage sites. Even the experts cannot enumerate them all without leaving one out. As a result the union of UNESCO world cultural heritage sites has conceived of a touring exhibition to bring people closer to the outstanding evidence of the history of people and nature. Mute and yet eloquent evidence of magnificent cultural achievement and natural phenomena. Monuments and areas of cities as well as industrial monuments and extraordinary landscapes have been marked out by the world heritage committee and placed und special protection. The touring exhibition conveys to the visitor the 32 world cultural heritage sites in all their fascinating uniqueness. UNESCO’s world heritage day, which takes place annually on the first Sunday in June, is to make the cultural legacy come alive for the visitor. To interest especially young people in the maintenance of cultural heritage and the protection of monuments the world heritage day is featuring an educative museum programme initiated by the German UNESCO commission. Under the auspices of “UNESCO world cultural heritages sites for the mediation of culture” art students from the university of Paderborn have created museum suitcases for each of the 32 world cultural heritage sites in Germany. As “museums in miniature” the museum suitcases depict the museums, monuments and world cultural heritage sites tangibly and graphically. Inviting one to both touch and see, the museums are intriguing to both old and young. As well as other sites, the University of Paderborn art students have been inspired by the Völklinger Ironworks and the Zeche Zollverein in Essen. In 2007 the project “world cultural heritage sites in a suitcase” won a Bundesministerium für Forschung und Bildung (Germany ministry for Research and Education) award.
