The feeding of the Stymphalian birds” -Installation by Margret Lafontaine
According to antique sages the Stymphalian birds ravaged at the lake of Stymphalos in Arcadia. Acting out a curse the crane-sized predatory birds exercised their reign of terror over the region’s inhabitants. Their iron beaks and claws skewered through any warrior’s armour and their wings had metal feathers like arrows that they shot down upon the hapless humans. Only Hercules could end the tyranny of the man-eating monsters. In her installation “the feeding of the Stymphalian birds” the artist Margret Lafontaine (born 1953) has banished the flying Arcadian monsters to a place beside the ore crusher of the powder metal facility.
