“The dialogue between industrial culture and nature is one of the most fascinating artistic themes in the contemporary acquisition of our civilisation. A central...
The paradise in the former coking plant of the Volklingen Ironworks, traces, in distinction to parks and gardens of a traditional kind, a completely different background. More than 100 years ago the Röchlings built their first coke batteries right beside the blast furnace at the place where today the industry culture garden has been created. Where once, flora and fauna had ruled, the machine world was to prevail with fire, smoke and dust. 25 years ago, the Volklingen Ironworks were shut down. For this period nature had the time to establish itself between the individual plant components and develop in a terrain untrodden and undisturbed by humans.
The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Volklingen Ironworks has used this unique opportunity and managed to create with the paradise a place accessible to people, featuring on the one side flora and fauna and on the other the remaining components of the coking plant. A fascinating balance has been incurred and its preservation is essential for the future. For the paradise of the industry culture garden, this green oasis in the midst of an industrial plant, permits a thrilling and exciting balance, a reconciliation between industry and nature, that can be experienced close-up.
