The World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte exhibition "Power&Magnificence. The splendour of Europe in the 19th century" contains a choice selection of artistic treasures in a range and variety that has never been before. The exhibition offers a new look at the highly significant upheaval in our modern civilisation 1830 – 1900. It was the first time that industry and art had ever entered into an alliance. The sites for the new co-operation were the World Exhibitions in London, Paris and Vienna. Designers, creators and architects drew up works of art that were then produced by the master craftsmen of the time.
And in a link to the achievements of previous art epochs, they used new machines to create works that trumped anything that had ever been seen before. For the first time, the study of earlier cultural-historic epochs and their styles was the prerequisite for mastering this task. The imperial, royal and ruling families soon recognised these treasures in gold, silver, rock crystal and ivory as the reflection of their own fame and position. To the aspiring middle classes, the artistic masterpieces embodied their desire to represent their life's dream.
The period 1830 – 1900 will live again in the 6000m2 of the blower hall in the World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte with more than 200 exhibits from the world's leading private collection of this kind.
There will be a catalogue of the exhibition.
