Not far from the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Volklingen Ironworks another lively cultural site of the 21st century has come into existence with the opening of the Centre Pompidou-Metz. Fascinating exhibitions of modern and contemporary art as well as dance, theatre, music and film are to be shown in this new art venue. The foundations for this are grounded in the famous collection of the Centre Pompidou, Musée national d’art moderne – the largest collection of art in Europe and the second largest worldwide. The Centre Pompidou-Metz is located on a six cornered plot of ground and features three galleries. Its peak is 77m high in the middle, a reference to the foundation year of the Centre Pompidou 1977. The complex reminds one of a huge circus tent, encircled by a forecourt and park. The special architectonic feature is the roof. It has been built entirely of wood and is reminiscent of the cane work of a Chinese hat. Underneath this roof construction three galleries cross and overlay each other. The outermost points feature large viewing windows offering panoramic views toward the cathedral, the main station and the Seille Park. The audacious creation by architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines offers a unique exhibition space Europe wide, over a total area of more than 10,000m², three exhibition galleries and the Grande Nef. In May 2010 the Centre Pompidou-Metz opens its first exhibition: “Chefs-d’œuvre? – Meisterwerke?” (Masterpieces?). The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Volklingen Ironworks is showing, in cooperation with the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the first insight into the architecture and the masterpieces. Welcome!
