An exhibition on State Security in the GDR

The exhibition “The enemy is whoever thinks differently” documents the emergence, tasks and methods of the Ministry of State Security (MfS). An exemplary selection of data and occurrences of GDR history elucidates how the MfS as “Shield and Sword of the Party” secured power for the State Party the SED: for instance through the surveillance of its own population, measures of repression and the use of informers the the so-called IM (inoffiziellen Mitarbeitern) an acronym meaning unofficial employees.
The exhibition, however, is not just limited to the presentation of perpetrator’s devices: great attention is given to the fate of those who came under the scrutiny of state security. By means of selected biographies the often grave consequences of secret police persecution is brought to light.
