Artist Projects

When in 1986 the Volklingen ironworks was shut down and the phase of the ironworks’ “memorialisation” began, the Blower Shed very rapidly became the centre of other activities. Restoration work was carried out to maintain the monument for posterity.

From very early on the Blower Shed was a venue for music theatre, performances and readings.  The Blower Shed was not just favoured for classical art exposition but a sought after location for avant-garde art.

The transformation of the Blower Shed into a museum in 1999, the opening of the works locker rooms, the implementation of new didactic media and multi-media installations displaying the manufacturing processes involved in iron and steel production, shaped the artists’ installations at the Volklingen Ironworks. These have been installed for the long term and bring about a new form of debate and interaction with the place, its history, the conditions, the situation, with the life of the people who worked there.
