From Saturday, 19 May 2018, the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site will present the exhibition "Legend Queen Elizabeth II. Luciano Pelizzari Collection". Queen Elizabeth II is a living legend; her life mirrors an entire epoch. During her reign, she has seen all German Federal Chancellors to date. Likewise British Prime Ministers from Winston Churchill through to Theresa May, and she has received them all. Queen Elizabeth II is, moreover, the most portrayed person of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The exhibition in the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site presents photos, paintings, stamps and coins from one of the largest collections of its kind, the Luciano Pelizzari Collection. They show a comprehensive portrait of the monarch and bring 90 years to life in pictures of the Queen. Thus a multiple history emerges: the Queen as a human being and as a monarch, her encounters with important events and personalities of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as a reflection of her private and public personae in art and culture.
Luciano Pelizzari was a master student of the famous artist Pietro Annigoni (1910 – 1988), who was best known for his portraits of the Queen. It was through this connection that Pelizzari’s collection began life. The exhibition “Legend Queen Elizabeth II. Luciano Pelizzari Collection" in the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site examines the modern Elizabethan era and delves into the myths and legends that have developed around Queen Elizabeth II. The objects chronicle the life of a woman whose reign as queen goes back to 1952. They present Queen Elizabeth II as a monarch, political actor, as the head of a family, and as figure idolized by the British and by a multitude of fans around the world. Queen Elizabeth II is a style icon, and her clothing and jewelry are legendary. She is a motif for and an emblem of pop culture.
The exhibition “Legend Queen Elizabeth II. Luciano Pelizzari Collection” in the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site will be enhanced by an extensive programme of tours, lecture series and accompanying events. A special visitor’s service will be available for booking group tours.
